At the Root of Exodus: Food security, conflict and international migration

Drawing from quantitative and qualitative research, this new WFP VAM report concluded that food security is a critical factor impacting international migration with far-reaching implications for policy-makers and the wider humanitarian community.

The study gave a voice to the people directly affected: more than 230 migrants, including refugees, were interviewed in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece and Italy originating from 10 different countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Eritrea, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Syria and The Gambia. In addition, a mobile phone survey was conducted among 570 Syrian refugees.

The study employed quantitative and qualitative research methods. WFP convened focus group discussions with migrants from ten different countries in Greece, Italy, Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon. Such discussions provided first-hand accounts regarding the decision-making process to leave, and provided valuable information on the situation in countries of origin, the triggers for migration, routes taken and future intentions. In an effort to validate the data collected from focus group discussions, WFP carried out household phone surveys among refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

The study found that food security is one of the critical factors impacting international migration. Such findings have far-reaching implications for WFP, its partners and relevant humanitarian actors.
