Change in animal Mortality Rates

Change in animal Mortality Rates

Code:
Result Level:
  • Outcome
Objectives:
  • Productivity enhancement
Description:

Number of animals dying as a proportion of the total number of animals To measure whether animals are surviving in line with expectations, or to identify if there is an increased incidence of the mortality rates amongst certain animals in a particular area. The lower the mortality rate the better - if this is particularly high, further investigations into why this is the case needs to be undertaken. Being able to disaggregate the data will be of a great help, particularly in terms of ability of certain households to understand how messages have been delivered.

Disaggregated By:

Geography/Livelihoods zone; Wealth groups; Livelihoods group (e.g. pastoralist, farmers, traders); Period to achieve the objective;

Direction of change:
  • Decrease (distance)
Data source:

Both secondary and primary data collection can be used according to context. Baseline/Endline. If multiyear programme consider also a mid-term evaluation Secondary data. Reliable/relevant sources from other actors, clusters or government. Seasonality needs to be considered. Data Collection methods: Secondary data analysis; Households Survey, Focus Group Discussion; Productive Organizations records Veterinary records, livestock census

Measure Notes:

> Number of cases of a particular disease, number of animals (total population) There may be misdiagnosis if the households are expected to respond, and if this is coming from specific records in agricultural offices, this may not be properly recorded. Obviously this has to be done for each individual type of animal - we cannot put goats, chickens and cows in together and calculate from there.
