Case Study - Green Pearl Project: Livelihoods, the gateway for ecosystem restoration

Haiti is the third most affected country under the climate risk index. Located in the Caribbean corridor, it is vulnerable to different natural disasters of which hurricanes have been the most impactful historical event. The mangroves and reefs have the function of protecting the coasts, however, socioeconomic deterioration and instability in the country are forcing coastal communities to exert pressure on mangroves for charcoal production and construction, and on reefs through overfishing practices and lack of waste management. From 2022 to 2024, the implementation of the Integrated Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management - Koray - Green Pearl Program by the Haitian Red Cross and the Princess Margriet Fund - Netherlands Red Cross in the Grand Anse Region, has directly supported 5,500 people, covering 2,000 hectares of mangroves, by enhancing their capacity to adapt to climate change.

This Case Study shows how promoting sustainable livelihoods can contribute to ecosystem restoration and increased resilience of coastal communities in the face of climate change. Available in English.
